RIP Vine

Vine is no more. In the world of social media - a fast paced, ever changing merri-go-round with new comers appearing constantly, it comes as no surprise that some platforms don’t last the distance. It seems the main players will continue to be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. If your business isn’t visible on social then you should consider making your digital marketing strategy a priority.

But back to Vine. Vine is (or was) a video making platform which allows its users to create 6 second videos. Initially its purpose was to capture casual moments in people’s lives however to the creator’s surprise, it morphed into a beacon of creativity and became a staple of internet culture.

Sadly, it seems to be coming to an end as Twitter, who bought Vine in 2012, struggle to generate money from the app. Naturally, viral marketing would be the way to go for Vine as a video platform but Vine’s owners resisted monetisation in the first place and refused to take a cut of their user’s sponsored vines. Adding advertisements before videos like YouTube was out of the question due to the short length and ads on the site itself would prove to be a lost cause too as most views come from vine’s being shared on third party sites such as Tumblr and Facebook.

However, the real beginning of the end began when Instagram introduced 15-second video clips in June 2013, eventually extending this to 60 seconds. Although celebrities used Vine (as seen below), Instagram began promoting the accounts of celebrities under their popular “explore” tab. Marketers began to show a clear preference for Instagram and many “Vine stars” followed them.

(Vine made by Ryan Gosling as a response to the “Ryan Gosling won’t eat his cereal” series of vines.)

We’re sad to see Vine go because it consistently pushed the limit of creativity and proved just how much you can fit into a few seconds. On top of that, it proved just how important viral online marketing is for a business to grow and be successful.

And with that we’d like to share our top 5 favourite vines (in no particular order) here at Yellow Spider Media:

Possibly the most viewed/looped vine ever is this moment captured during the terror attacks in Paris
