Why Is Target Audience Segmentation Important?

What is Target Audience Segmentation?

First of all, let’s define the target audience – the group of people that you want to promote your business to. Your target audience is who you want your business to be seen by, whether online on social media or otherwise.

Segmenting that target audience is one of the most commonly used marketing methods used. Target audience segmentation is identifying subgroups within a target audience so you can tailor your content to them. Subgroups can be based on demographics such as age, gender, location, income, education, or average income. For example, if your business sells both men's and women’s clothes, you want to make sure that the men’s clothes are advertised to the men and the women’s clothes to the women. If you say, a local council and you’re holding an event that will be informative for residents of a certain town, you want to make sure that your invites don’t go out to anyone living hundreds of miles away.

Why Is It Beneficial To Know Your Audience?

Target audience segmentation helps you to decide and deliver personalised and relevant content to more commercially appealing audiences – ie. High-quality leads are more likely to convert. By clearly defining and segmenting a broader target audience, you are able to select the most valuable segments for your business and then develop your marketing mix and position your product/service specifically for each segment.

Using target audience segmentation can identify niches with specific needs and deliver more focused and effective marketing messages.

What Happens Now I’ve Segmented a Target Audience

Knowing your target audience is the best way to create effective and relevant content. You can use the information you have to tailor social media content and other marketing materials. Are all your customers over 75 years old? In that case, you’re probably best to not advertise on Tik-Tok.

You can define specific audiences on social media advertising, too. Facebook and Instagram have incredible algorithms and Al to make sure you’re paid adverts get in front of who you want them to. Simply add the details of who you want to target, set the ad to run for at least 3-4 days and let the machine learning do the rest.

If you want to know more about the needs and wants of your audience, why not ask them? Market research can be conducted through online polls, surveys, focus groups, one-to-one sessions, and phone surveys.
