How Videos Are Changing Social Media

Social media marketing via video has risen in usage a great deal over the past few years and is still continuing to rise as time goes on.

As of 2016, YouTube has over a billion users and accumulates 3.25 billion hours of video watched each month. But YouTube isn’t the social video platform; Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and many others have, over the years, emphasised their video features more and more. However, what makes the increase in video popularity interesting is the vast difference in how each social media platform allows their users to utilise their video features.

Snapchat’s videos are short with emphasis on capturing events as they happen, this makes it ideal for liveblogging parties, concerts, etc. Whereas, Facebooks videos are more brand focused with the addition of “shop now” links, the ability to tag others in your video and feature it on your page.

Another up and coming trend in regards to video marketing is livestreams and live videos. Twitter has incorporated periscope into its app making it easier for brands broadcast their livestreams to a broad audience.

The most successful brand livestreams in the past year have been those which connected with their audience. A good example is Wendy’s “Chill with Rhett and Link” where Wendy’s used Rhett and Link, a popular YouTube duo, to advertise a new summer drink by chatting with fans and performing live songs and skits.

With the amount of changes made to video marketing in just the past year, it’s impossible to tell where 2017 will take us, but one thing is for certain and that is that social videos will continue to rise in popularity and will soon be a must for any digital marketer.
